How Often should you Wash your Hair?

One of the greatest questions when it comes to hair is “How often should you wash your hair?”

Is washing your hair everyday healthy or should you skip a day or two in between?

There are some women who can’t go a day without washing their hair and then there are some other women (especially the busy moms out there) who may not be able to wash their hair every day or even every other day.

So, what is the best answer when it comes to how often to wash your hair?

Why we Wash our Hair

Before you can decide how often you should wash your hair, you need to understand why exactly you need to wash your hair at all.

All over your body you have sebaceous glands that secrete natural oils. These oils help to moisturize your skin and hair and even help keep them healthy.

Although it may sound gross that your skin secretes basically fat cells (the oils) onto your hair and skin it is necessary to keep your skin dry and waterproof.

Without these natural oils, your skin and hair would be really, really dry and may even shed prematurely from the dryness making your inside skin layers exposed.

But, too much of a good thing isn’t always good.

When too much oil is collected on the skin and hair, your hair, especially by the roots, tends to look oily and greasy and dirty.

For some women this may happen after one day and for other women it may take 3-4 days before their hair every looks oily and dirty.

How often should I wash my Hair?

This question really can only be answered by you.

Of course there are some standards you can go by when it comes to how often to wash hair but is mostly based off your personal preferences and your hair.

There are some professionals that state you shouldn’t wash your hair everyday because you will strip all the natural oils from your hair, possibly making it dry and brittle.

Some even argue that washing your hair too much can make your sebaceous glands work overtime to compensate for the lack of oil in your hair making your hair get oily much quicker.

Then there are other professionals that state that everyday washing is fine as long as you use a gentle shampoo.

These professionals argue that you need to wash your hair everyday in order to prevent too much oil from collecting on your skin and causing skin problems like acne or dandruff.

Washing your hair everyday is somewhat of a new trend.

Back in the 1950’s and 60’s women used to only visit their hairdresser once or maybe twice a week to get their hair washed and styled.

Instead of washing it at home they would wear a shower cap to protect it from the water.

If you have ever tried a 50’s hair style of a pin up hairstyle you probably know that having somewhat dirty hair actually makes it easier and makes the hairstyle stay much longer.
